People buy aged domains for one reason: backlinks someone else earned. The same backlinks can also be a liability. If the domain was used for gambling, counterfeits or link spam, you inherit that history.

What real results look like
The domain vetting pipeline on wordpress.org returned: Domain Rank 859/1000, about 4.8 million referring domains, 85% dofollow, Spam Score 17%, about 2.81 million results for site:, and "WordPress" as the top anchor (28.5%). That is a healthy, natural profile dominated by brand anchors.
The opposite is just as recognisable: a domain with 77 referring domains, rank 0, Spam Score 54%, and anchors that are almost all sentences like "High Quality Dofollow Backlinks DA 50 PBN Network Service... Buy Backlinks Online Cheap" from auto-generated "backlink checker" sites. Those links carry no value and add risk.
Google's line: expired domain abuse
Google's 2024 spam policies name expired domain abuse: buying an expired domain and filling it with unrelated, low-value content mainly to manipulate rankings. Continuing a similar topic with genuinely useful content, or 301-redirecting relevant pages to a related site, stays on the right side.
