AI Rewriter: When Paragraph and Sentence Rewriting Helps, and When It Gets You Penalized
AI rewriters are great for polishing, changing tone, shortening and localizing, and useless for spinning other people's articles. What Google says about scaled rewritten content, how to pick a rewrite mode, and a free AI paragraph rewriter with 5 runs a day.
AI rewriters are great for polishing, changing tone, shortening and localizing, and useless for spinning other people's articles. What Google says about scaled rewritten content, how to pick a rewrite mode, and a free AI paragraph rewriter with 5 runs a day.
There are two common ways to use an AI rewriter. One makes your writing better; the other gets your site demoted. The difference is not the tool but what you feed it.
Where AI rewriting helps
- Polishing your own draft: fixing grammar, splitting long sentences, making it read naturally.
- Changing tone: turning a casual product blurb into a formal B2B page, or the other way round.
- Shortening: cutting a 300-word paragraph to 180 for a meta description, an ad or a social post.
- Localizing: turning source material into a first draft in the target market's language, then having a fluent reader check it.
Where it hurts: spinning
Copying a top-ranking article, rewriting it and publishing it is the most common and least useful approach. In its March 2024 spam policy update, Google named "scaled content abuse": producing many pages to manipulate rankings without adding value for users, whether a human or AI wrote them.
If the rewritten text adds nothing the original lacked, such as your own test data, screenshots, experience or opinion, it is duplicate content to readers and search engines alike.
Picking a rewrite mode
| Mode | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | New wording, same information | Check names and numbers |
| Fluent | Drafts by non-native writers | Smallest change, safest |
| Formal | Sales emails, B2B sites, reports | Can get long and stiff |
| Simple | Tutorials, product docs | May drop detail |
| Shorten | Meta descriptions, ads, social | About 40% shorter; check key facts survive |
A real example
Original: "Our tool helps you find keywords that are easy to rank for."
- Fluent: "Our tool assists you in discovering keywords that are simple to rank for."
- Formal: "Our tool assists in identifying keywords that possess a favorable ranking potential."
Formal mode made the sentence more businesslike, and also more convoluted. Short, clear sentences are often fine as they are; rewriting pays off on long, clumsy or ungrammatical paragraphs.
A workflow that holds up
- Write first, even if only bullet points, and include your own experience and data.
- Use the AI rewriter to polish or translate.
- Read it through: check numbers, brand names and terminology, and cut filler.
- Before publishing, ask what this gives readers that the top three results do not.
