Competitor Keyword Analysis: Target Their #4-#10 Rankings, Pay Per Query
Your competitor's #1 keywords are hard to take; their #4-#10 buying-intent, lower-difficulty keywords are the opportunity. The filtering logic, why head terms are a trap, and how to run a keyword gap analysis on live data without a monthly subscription.
Your competitor's #1 keywords are hard to take; their #4-#10 buying-intent, lower-difficulty keywords are the opportunity. The filtering logic, why head terms are a trap, and how to run a keyword gap analysis on live data without a monthly subscription.
Most keyword gap analyses go after the competitor's #1 terms and stall for months. The better targets are keywords the competitor holds weakly: ranking #4-#10 means the page is relevant but not dominant, so better content has a real chance to pass it.
Three filters
| Filter | Why |
|---|---|
| Competitor ranks #4-#10 | On page one but not entrenched: cheapest to overtake |
| Commercial or transactional intent | Searchers are comparing or ready to buy |
| Lower keyword difficulty (prefer ≤ 40) | Reachable without a huge backlink profile |
Why head terms are a trap: a real example
A live query against a hosting company returned "webhost hosting" (110,000 searches/month, KD 77) and "domain name hosting company" (74,000, KD 100) as the biggest #4-#10 terms. The volume is tempting, but that difficulty takes a very strong link profile and brand. The practical wins are the long-tail, clear-intent keywords under KD 40 in the same data set.
Writing for a gap keyword
- One article per primary gap keyword; cover related gap keywords as sections.
- Add verifiable information the competitor lacks: your own tests, screenshots, dated price checks.
- Never invent test results. If you have not tested it, mark it as pending and publish once you have real data.
- Close with an FAQ and FAQPage structured data.
Run a gap analysis per query
The competitor gap pipeline pulls the competitor's #4-#10 commercial and transactional keywords live from DataForSEO, prefers low-difficulty ones as the focus keyword, and drafts an article from that data only, leaving "[Add your own test result]" placeholders instead of inventing evidence. $0.15 per run, no subscription, automatic refund when no gaps are found or generation fails.
