FAQPage is schema.org structured data that tells search engines "this page contains a list of questions and answers". It is easy to write; the important part is setting the right expectations first.

Reality check: FAQ rich results shrank

Since August 2023

Google now shows FAQ rich results only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. For most commercial sites, FAQPage markup no longer produces expandable questions in search results.

Is it still worth adding? Yes, for different reasons: it makes the Q&A structure explicit for search engines and AI assistants parsing the page, and writing a real FAQ forces you to answer the questions users actually have, which improves the content itself.

Correct JSON-LD

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "Do you ship to Canada?",
      "acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": "Yes. Orders to Canada ship within 2 business days." }
    },
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "What is the return window?",
      "acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": "You can return unused items within 30 days of delivery." }
    }
  ]
}
</script>
  • Every question and answer in the markup must be visible on the page with the same text.
  • Use it only for FAQs answered by the site; user-submitted answers (forums) should use QAPage.
  • No advertising copy or questions unrelated to the page.
  • It can go anywhere in the HTML; head or the end of the body are common.

Validate after publishing

  • Check syntax with Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator.
  • Watch the Enhancements reports in Search Console for errors.
  • Keep the JSON valid: matching quotes, commas and brackets; unescaped double quotes inside answers are the usual culprit.
