How to Check Your Bing Rankings — and Why Bing Matters More in the AI Search Era
Bing is more than the second search engine: Microsoft Copilot is built on it, and ChatGPT search uses third-party providers including Bing. Two ways to check Bing rankings, why they differ from Google, and a real check.
Bing is more than the second search engine: Microsoft Copilot is built on it, and ChatGPT search uses third-party providers including Bing. Two ways to check Bing rankings, why they differ from Google, and a real check.
Many site owners only watch Google, but Bing results power Microsoft Copilot, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo, and ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers including Bing. Your Bing rankings indirectly affect how often these AI assistants surface your site.
1. Two Ways to Check
| Method | What you see | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Bing Webmaster Tools | Real impressions, clicks and average position for your own site, by query and page | Verified sites only; data is grouped by week |
| Live rank checker | Any site’s current position for any keyword, plus who holds the top 10 | One keyword at a time; a point-in-time snapshot |
Use both: Webmaster Tools shows which queries already bring impressions; a live check shows who you compete with on them and how far behind you are.
2. Real Example: "keyword research tool"
On 9 October 2026 we checked "keyword research tool" (United States) for ahrefs.com:
| Position | Domain | Page |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | washingtonpost.com | Keyword (a Washington Post word game) |
| 2 | keyword.io | Free Keyword Research Tool |
| 3 | keywordtool.io | Keyword Tool |
| 4 | ahrefs.com | Free Keyword Generator Tool |
| 5 | semrush.com | Free Keyword Tool |
- ahrefs.com ranks 4th with a free tool page, not a blog post: for tool queries, Bing also prefers pages you can use right away.
- First place goes to a word game called "Keyword": Bing read the query more literally, a kind of mismatch that is rarer on Google.
- The same keyword can rank very differently on Google and Bing, so check Bing separately instead of inferring it from Google.
3. Why Bing and Google Rankings Differ
- Indexing: Bing usually crawls less than Google, so new pages may not be indexed yet. Submit a sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools or push updated URLs with IndexNow.
- On-page signals: Bing reacts more strongly to titles and keyword matches on the page.
- Social and brand signals: Bing’s own guidelines say social signals are taken into account.
- Technical issues: a robots.txt rule blocking Bingbot or pages returning errors will make pages drop out of Bing.
