How to Check Your Website's Google Ranking: 3 Methods and How Accurate They Are
Search Console, a manual search and a rank checker measure different things. What average position means, why your own search results mislead, and how to check rankings by country along with AI Overviews.

"Where does my site rank on Google?" sounds simple, yet different methods give different numbers, because they measure different things.
Three methods compared
| Method | What it measures | Good for | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Average position across all impressions over a period | Trends for your own site | Your site only; averages are skewed by long-tail queries |
| Searching Google yourself | What you see, here and now, on your account | A quick look | Personalised by account, location and history; no other countries |
| A rank checker | Live results for a chosen country and device | Any site, any country, competitors | A snapshot in time; recheck regularly |
Why your own search misleads
- Personalisation: when signed in, Google adjusts results to your history, so sites you visit rank higher for you.
- Location: results differ by country and even city.
- Device: mobile and desktop rankings can differ.
- Incognito removes some personalisation but not location.
A real example
On 29 September 2026 we checked "dmarc checker" (United States, desktop) with our keyword rank checker: mxtoolbox.com ranked #1, the query showed an AI Overview, and the AI Overview cited mxtoolbox.com. The top five were mxtoolbox.com, dmarcian.com, easydmarc.com, powerdmarc.com and valimail.com.
Ranking checks now need to include AI Overviews: they sit above every organic result, so being cited matters as much as ranking first. In our study of 1,000 keywords, only 56.1% of AI Overviews cited the #1 result.
Getting value from ranking data
- Check the market you target, not just what your own browser shows.
- Recheck on a fixed schedule and watch the trend, not single swings.
- Look at who holds the top 10 and what kind of pages they are; it tells you what to publish.
- Watch for AI Overviews: they lower click-through, so either aim to be cited or focus on keywords without one.
