On-Page SEO Check: How to Read the Score and Which Issues Are Worth Fixing (Two Real Audits)

On-page SEO checkers give you a score and a list of issues, but the score does not decide rankings. What the checks cover, which issues to fix first and which to ignore, with real audits of a top-ranking backlinko page and one of our own tool pages.

An on-page SEO check fetches a URL’s HTML and runs through the title, meta description, H1, canonical, image alt text, HTTPS, render-blocking resources and more, then gives a score. Its real value is catching technical oversights quickly, not predicting rankings.

1. Three Kinds of Checks

KindExamplesPriority
Indexing and displayError status, wrong canonical, missing title, noindex, no faviconHigh: affects whether the page is indexed and how it looks in results
Clicks and understandingTitle truncated, missing description, missing or duplicate H1Medium: affects click-through from results
Experience and detailMissing alt text, low text ratio, render-blocking resourcesLow to medium: worth fixing, but do not expect rankings to move on their own

2. Audit 1: A Top-Ranking Page Still Has "Issues"

On 9 October 2026 we checked backlinko.com/seo-checklist, a 6,000-word guide on a well-known SEO blog: score 93, 4 issues.

IssueWhat it isFix it?
Title too short"The Complete SEO Checklist" is 26 charactersNo: a short, precise title suits this query
Images missing alt textDecorative images in a long articleWorth adding: helps image search and accessibility
Duplicate meta tagsRepeated meta declarations on the pageYes: avoid sending conflicting signals
Low text-to-HTML ratio6,323 words of copy, but heavier HTMLIgnore: the content itself is substantial

The lesson: the score is a checklist result, not a ranking prediction. A substantial article does not lose rankings over a few failed checks; content quality and links matter far more. Read each issue and ask whether it actually matters for that page.

3. Audit 2: Checking Our Own Tool Page

The same day we checked our own website traffic checker page. It scored 98 but surfaced two issues worth fixing:

  • No favicon: Google shows a site icon next to the URL in search results and falls back to a generic icon when there is none, which hurts recognition and clicks. We have since added one.
  • Title too long: "Free Website Traffic Checker — Estimate Organic Google Traffic | CallAI" is 71 characters and may be truncated. Google truncates by display width; keeping the key message within the first 50–60 characters is a safe rule of thumb.

4. Things to Keep in Mind

  • The checker reads the HTML returned on first request and does not run JavaScript. If key content only appears after client-side rendering, that is itself something to fix.
  • Check one URL at a time: start with your highest-traffic pages and templates (article, product, category). Fixing a template fixes many pages at once.
  • After fixing, request a recrawl with Search Console’s URL Inspection tool.
