Q:What is an MX record?
It tells other mail servers where to deliver email for a domain. Lower priority numbers are tried first.
Q:What if there is no MX record?
The domain receives no email. If it also sends none, publish v=spf1 -all and DMARC p=reject so it cannot be forged.
Q:How is the provider detected?
From the MX host names. It is accurate for major providers; if a gateway such as Proofpoint or Mimecast sits in front, you see the gateway.
