How to Check a Domain’s Registration Date and Age — What Whois Tells You, and Does Domain Age Matter for SEO?
Whois shows a domain’s registration date, expiry and registrar. Domain age is not a Google ranking factor, but it helps when buying aged domains, sizing up competitors and spotting phishing sites. How to check, how to read it, and what the registration date cannot tell you.

To find out when a domain was registered, when it expires and which registrar holds it, look up its Whois (or the newer RDAP) record. The data is public, though privacy services usually hide the registrant’s name and contact details.
1. What Whois Shows
| Field | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Registration date | Creation date of the current registration | Estimate the domain’s age |
| Expiry date | How long the current registration runs | Is it about to expire; does the owner renew long-term? |
| Registrar | The company the domain is registered with | Big brands often use enterprise registrars such as MarkMonitor |
| Registrant | Often hidden by privacy protection | Usually not visible |
2. Real Example: backlinko.com
On 9 October 2026 we checked backlinko.com with the domain Whois lookup: registered on 28 September 2011 (15 years old), expiring on 28 September 2035, registrar MarkMonitor. It also showed about 510,000 estimated monthly organic visits and about 57,000 referring domains.
Renewing nearly a decade ahead with an enterprise registrar is a common way for established brands to protect a core domain.
3. Does Domain Age Affect SEO?
Google’s John Mueller has said plainly that domain age on its own does not help rankings. Old sites rank well because they have built up content and links over the years, not because they were registered early.
If a domain expires, is deleted and is registered again by someone else, Whois shows the new date; conversely, a domain registered ten years ago may have sat unused. To judge an aged domain’s real history, check its Wayback Machine snapshots to see what it actually hosted each year.
4. Common Uses
- Before buying an aged domain: compare the registration date, historical snapshots and backlinks to rule out spammy pasts or frequent ownership changes.
- Spotting phishing: be wary of domains imitating a known brand that were registered only days ago.
- Competitor research: a competitor’s domain age and renewal pattern hint at how long they have been investing.
